More Than a Mother: Why Prioritising Yourself Matters in Motherhood

Did you know two-thirds of women feel unprepared for motherhood? I was one of them.



Deciding to have a baby was one of the easiest decisions my husband and I ever made—an unusual feat for two naturally indecisive people! But nothing could have prepared me for the identity shift that followed. My body changed, my lifestyle changed, and—most unexpectedly—so did my sense of self. What I didn’t realise at the time was that feeling unprepared is a shared experience for many mothers.


At first, I thought I was alone in my struggles, but as I searched for answers, I realised I was far from it. Just a little search on google makes it clear that I was not alone and that a lot of women are entering into motherhood unprepared. “My son will be 6 months old next week and everyday I'm still shocked at how unprepared I was for this whole being-a-mom thing” or “Took a 10 week birth class (which didn't prepare me for our NICU stay), but didn't think to read up on the first year”. And a study by Lansinoh* shows the stats too, where 88% of moms surveyed said they weren’t prepared for the postpartum period, and over 95% of moms think new mothers are not sufficiently supported by our society. And while the majority of women felt prepared to care for their baby, 92% said there were parts of the postpartum period they were not prepared for.
